The Philadelphia Phillies relied on no-hit stuff from starter Bobby Sauder to defeat the Cleveland Guardians 4-0 at Citizens Bank Park today.
“It’s quite a thrill,” Sauder told the media afterward. “This is a top-notch league. A no-hitter against any team in the league is something special. I can’t believe I did it.”
To get his name logged in the American League records, he stopped Cleveland cold and hitless, surrendering 4 walks and fanning 12 of the 32 batters he faced.
Philadelphia manager Dizzy Smith was in a jovial mode after the game, kidding with reporters that Sauder “made managing easy today.”
“I didn’t have hardly any decisions to make like I usually do,” he said. “I didn’t even have to come up with a pinch hitter.”
This year Sauder has a 7-7 record with a 4.56 ERA in 23 starts.
