Suspensions Handed Out for Bench-Clearing Brawl

Yesterday at Citizens Bank Park Juan Resendez and Jon Frates got into each other’s space and then into each other’s face. They began to grapple and fell to the ground. That’s when it boiled over into a full-fledged bench-clearing tussle between the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Guardians. Reason finally prevailed as the umpires restored order. After much discussion, only the two major combatants were ejected from the game.

Today the league office notified the ballclubs that Resendez will have to sit out 3 while Frates would be given a 6-game suspension for their roles in the brawl.

Resendez on the season is hitting .279 with 15 home runs. His stats include 34 RBIs and 35 runs scored.

Frates has gone to the hill for 33 relief appearances this season, nailing down no saves while notching a 3-0 record with a 4.45 ERA. The Cleveland reliever has limited opposing batters to a .256 batting average.
