Mendoza Slams 5 Hits for Kansas City

It’s not something you read about in the sports pages every day — a 5-for-5 day. For many, it might come around only once in a career — and for Mike Mendoza, it came around today.

The 26-year-old third baseman scattered hits all over Comerica Park to pace the Kansas City Royals to a 8-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Detroit skipper Brad Voyles told reporters in the press room that “Mendoza deserves a hat-tip.”

“He hit some good pitches against us,” he said. “In fact, according to our scouting reports, Mendoza hit several that he is not supposed to be able to hit.”

Mike Mendoza singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

A look at his season totals shows Mendoza with 2 home runs, .293 BA, .354 OBP, 14 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
