San Diego Padres first baseman Pete Alonso sensed he was going to have a good day at the plate, but he still might have underestimated it a little.
Prior to the start of today’s contest with the New York Yankees, Alonso told teammates he was sure he would hit a home run. He did — three times.
“During batting practice I really had my swing down pat,” he recalled. “I felt some thunder in the lumber.”
The big day from Alonso pushed the Padres past the Yankees, 10-4. To go along with the homers, he collected 4 RBIs and scored 3 runs.
“I was seeing good, feeling good and swinging good,” Alonso told reporters after the game.
Pete Alonso hit a solo-shot off Luis Morales in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Luis Morales in the 3rd, walked in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off Norm McNeilly in the 9th.
This season Alonso has 6 home runs and a .283 batting average.
