Sheffield Enters the Hall

The Major League Baseball Hall of Fame just added a fine right fielder and hitter to its number. The newest member of baseball’s most elite group is Gary Sheffield, who retired at the age of 41.

“I always knew I was good enough to play, but the Hall of Fame was one of the few things I never even dreamed of,” said Sheffield at his induction ceremony. “For me to focus a lot on the individual, that’s not the way I learned to play the game. Baseball is a team game. You win as a team, you lose as team. You also do so many things together, but it is not an ‘I’ thing.”

During his illustrious career, Sheffield had 509 home runs among his 2689 hits, while batting .292. He played in 2576 games, scored 1636 runs and knocked in 1676 runs.
